Here are some things you can expect from your family dental professional during their examination that will help them determine the cause of your tooth pain.
Assessing Your Health And Dental History
Your dentist will ask you questions pertaining to your health and dental history. For example, they will inquire about any recent infections that you may have had such as sinus infections. It is not uncommon for people to experience tooth pain as a result of a sinus infection. Sinus infection-related tooth pain typically occurs on the top row of your teeth; however, your bottom row can be affected too.
When your sinuses become swollen as a result of a viral or bacterial infection, it can put pressure on your gums and teeth, resulting in pain. Your dentist may also ask you if you suffer from migraine headaches, grind your teeth, or consume acidic foods and drinks. Acid from foods and drinks can lead to enamel erosion, which can cause tooth sensitivity and pain.
Examination And Imaging Assessments
Your dentist will perform a comprehensive oral examination. They will examine your gums for inflammation, bleeding, periodontal pockets, and lesions. Your teeth will also be checked for decay and cracks. In addition, your dentist will carefully assess your wisdom teeth to see if they are impacted or coming in sideways because this can contribute to significant tooth pain.
Diagnostic imaging tests such as bitewing X-rays will be taken to assess your teeth for pulp infections or structural damage. If your bitewing X-rays are inconclusive, your dentist may recommend panoramic X-rays, which typically capture images of your entire mouth, including your jawbone. Once the source of your tooth pain has been identified, your dentist will recommend a treatment plan. However, if your oral examination and diagnostic imaging tests are normal, you may be referred back to your primary care physician for further evaluation and treatment.
